Tips on Buying a CO Detector
A carbon monoxide detector is an investment in your family's safety. Remember, a reliable detector isn't necessarily the cheapest or the most expensive model available. When choosing a detector, look for the following features:
- Buy a detector that plugs into an electrical outlet or is direct-wired into your house.
- Look for a detector that is UL approved. The UL seal indicates that the detector has passed dozens of tests in the areas of performance, safety and accuracy.
- Choose a model with a test and reset button. These buttons enable you to easily test whether the detector is operating properly.
- Consider a unit with a digital readout. Then, if an alarm sounds, you can look at the screen to determine the CO level and the appropriate action. Without a readout, a homeowner is left to decide if it is an emergency or merely an alert.
- False alarms are possible, so look for a detector that requires no maintenance (sensor replacement) after a false alarm.
- For best protection, choose a detector that monitors for sudden high or low levels of CO over time.
- If you buy only one detector, mount it near your sleeping area. And remember, install your detector strictly according to manufacturer's instructions.
